SALU Self Help Blind and Handicapped Association is a legally registered Ethiopian resident charity working for the well-being of persons with disabilities (PwDs) through different interventions in different regions of the country. It was founded in 1997 by 60 persons with disabilities who were eager for independence, job creation, and shunning mendicancy. Initially, the founding members began to train each other and produce some small homemade products with their own financial contributions. This small-scale beginning was later accompanied by financial and technical support from different local and international partners working on disability and other social issues. Since its establishment, SALU has been mainly working on the economic empowerment of persons with disabilities besides other social and livelihood issues. It has been implementing different disability-focused interventions mainly in Addis Ababa, and Hawassa in Sidama region.
Currently, 20 visually impaired children aged between 5-12 are enrolled and will stay with us for two years before they move on to inclusive schools. Please make this possible by donating to Salu on the Wegen fund platform.
